I have two things on my mind right now. I'm unwinding from the big SCBWI conference in New York City, and gearing up for our conference here.
New York was fabulous! The keynote speakers included writing/illustrating powerhouses Nikki Grimes, David Wiesner, Carolyn Mackler, Susan Patron, and Richard Peck. I also heard two editors speak in their breakout sessions, "What I Want to Publish," Nancy Siscoe, from Knopf, does 12 to 15 books per year. SCBWI New Mexico tried something different for our fall retreat this year. We returned to our usual location, Hummingbird Music Camp in the beautiful mountains near Jemez Springs. However, instead of general lecture/workshops, we split into four intensive critique groups, each led by an experienced author/teacher. Notes from Chris, from the Fall News Messenger:
I'm still abuzz from the international SCBWI conference in Los Angeles. New Mexicans made a great turnout, with at least eight local members attending. People reported a fantastic time, with the biggest complaint that of "brain overload" from all the information and inspiration. The conference offered something new this year - two special intensive tracks, one on poetry with Lee Bennett Hopkins, and the other on series books with two Grossett and Dunlap editors. Join us for a working Writers' Retreat at Hummingbird Music Camp near Jemez Springs. Experienced children's book authors will lead small groups in a weekend of intensive critiquing, revising and writing. Participants will learn how to improve their own work by learning how to critique each others' work. The 20 participants will be split into four groups of five according to the genre they are writing. By September 10 each advanced group will exchange complete picture book manuscripts, or the first 20 pages of a novel for advance reading. Beginners do not need to submit work in advance. The weekend will include group critique sessions and time to work on revisions in a private bedroom.
